I am not sure why your book would say to wait until your puppy is four months old but I definitely feel you need to start training right away. For example, you wouldn't want to wait until your puppy is four months old to start potty training. Puppies are so willing and ready to learn at such a young age (6-8 weeks) or younger if you get your puppy younger than that. The group classes I teach have puppies 8 weeks old in them and they do fantastic! The more you teach them now, the easier and better trained they will be as adolescents and adults. Don't wait! Start training NOW as soon as you get your Aussie home. You will be so glad you did! - Carrie

I am a chihuahuas breeder, from the time the puppies are 3 weeks old I start to train them to get out of their bed and pee on a pee pee pads. They are very smart little ones and lots of my customers are impressed when they see them using the pads. When you buy a puppie you have to have pation and you have to be firm. - cristina

Ok, I am picking up my eight week old australian shepherd tomorrow and I have been trying to read and research everything I possibly can on dog training. I have two small children, and I want to do this the right way. I researched dog breeds for months before I decided that the australian shepherd was the right dog for us. I know they are very smart breed and very trainable. I also bought the book "Dog Training for Dummies" and she states that you should not start training a puppy until it is four months of age because their brains are still developing. I am confused now. - Christie

Oh, so very true. I recently adopted 2 dogs, one is a 2 yr old Italian Greyhound who was a wash out in the show ring because he is so timid, the other is a 6 month old Standard Poodle that I have begun training for his CGC and he will go forward to be my Service Dog. The poodle had no training when he came to me 2 months ago and within less than 48 hours he was responding reliably to both hand and verbal commands to sit, down and wait. He is still responding reliably to both and is eager and willing to learn. - Sandi Ellis
