Best Dog Breeds for Children - Top 20

What dog breed is best for kids?

• Size: Very small breeds of dogs, such as toy poodles or chihuahuas, may not be good choices for a
young child. These dogs are fragile and may become easily injured when around rambunctious
children. They also tend to be more easily frightened by a lot of activity and noise. Frightened dogs may
snap or bite in order to protect themselves. Larger dogs or sturdier small breeds, like pugs or beagles,
are often better able to tolerate the activity, noise and rough play that is an inevitable part of living
with children.

• Temperament: While generalizations can be made about specific dog breeds, it is just as important to
consider a dog’s individual temperament. A dog’s personality is shaped by both past experiences and
genetics.

• Breed type: Some of the sporting breeds, such as labradors and golden retrievers, can make good pets
for families with children. Breeds that have been selected for protective behavior, such as chows and
rottweilers, are not usually recommended. It’s sometimes difficult for this type of dog to comfortably
tolerate the many comings and goings of children and their friends who may be perceived as territorial
intruders. Herding breeds, such as border collies and shepherds, are inclined to “herd” children, chasing
and nipping at their heels.

No German shepherd?

I think the list is very helpful, i just don't know why german shepherds arent on it! they are fabulous family dogs and they love their humans compassionately... especially small children! The only thing i can think of is that they would be overly-protective of small children. i recently got a GSD pup, and he loves my little brother and I. We aren't young kids, being 13 and 10, but i would definately put a German shepherd before a schnauzer! i find that they became irritated too easily and snap, sort of like a chihuahua.. please don't take any offence to this, it is just my opinion. Please consider this if you ever update your list!smilies/cheesy.gif

smilies/smiley.gif this is an awsome list but the part that says shepherds are a hurding dog.Isnt nessicarilly all that a german
shepherd is about.they can also be breeded To Make a good gard dog and Pritty much every thing else To rescue and police.

there more of a working dog in my opinon. Because its a vary smart animal. Numder 3 in the smartests dog breeds in the world.Any ways ive been around a lot of german shepherds. There rilly nice pets.Ive never seen them chase small animals befor.

Unlike my border colly sometimes dose.Probably because im good at traing shepherds. then i do with collys .Also my german shepherd gets along with cats an my other dog vary well.I no this is kind of out of the blue.Thats why i think that there more capibal of being more the an herding dog.

sorry spelling is not to great.
