Puppy Leashes

Whenever you take your puppy outside of your home, he should be on a leash. As with collars, you can get overwhelmed with all the options available.  For training, a straight six foot nylon or leather leash will do just fine.

Other types of leashes
If you are taking a casual walk, you may want to purchase a flexi leash as well.  However, I would not recommend using one of those until your dog has learned to walk properly on a loose leash.  As your dog gets older and better trained, you may consider purchasing a 20 foot leash for training purposes only.  This will come in handy when training behaviors like come when called and distance stays.

re: leash introduction

I would just snap the leash on and let them drag it around the house at first. Maybe try putting the leash on them when you are about to feed them dinner. The goal here, is to get them comfortable being on the leash and to teach them that fun things happen when the leash is on. As far as trying to get them to move forward while being on the leash.. Have a treat handy and when they try to resist the leash, ask them for a sit or just show them the treat and lure them forward until they reach your side. At this point, give them the treat. Work on treating them consistently when they are at your side and not resisting the leash. Many puppies have the problem of turning into a bucking bronco when the leash goes on. It is because it is new to them so they respond to the leash tugging by tugging back the opposite direction.
Work on making the leash a rewarding experience and they will feel confident on leash in no time!

Leash Introduction?

My question is leash introduction. I have 2 Mastiff pups, 8 weeks old. When I place the leash on either they stop, drop & roll. They immediately want to go away from me in a backwards stepping/pulling motion. What is the best way to stop this?
